Topic THREE: THE FUTURE OF NURSING INFORMATICS

In the past, nurse educators have established  principles of nursing theory and taught them in nursing schools. Nursing, a scientific discipline, requires creativity in its execution. The art of nursing lies in the application of concepts and principles of nursing theory to the design of individualized care using the nursing process. It is a scientific discipline that takes a holistic approach to the diagnosis and treatment of potential and actual responses to illnesses. Aside from theories, nurses have used innovations in the medical field as technology evolves so does nursing and its education.

Today’s healthcare environment continually places increasing demands on nurses to communicate, share data, and synthesize information through the use of information systems, with or without the assistance of computers (Chapman et al., 1994; Ngin and Simms, 1996). In addition to having knowledge of information systems, nurses who are computer literate have the opportunity to use the power and efficiency of computer systems to play an important role in enhancing patient care delivery, offering safe care, and shaping nursing practice. In today's information age, nurses are expected to keep pace with the rapidly advancing technology. Appropriate utilization of computers and information systems can help nurses make well informed decisions regarding management and patient care issues. Therefore, it is important to include education in the use of computerized healthcare knowledge systems or Nursing Informatics in the nursing curricula. It is important for the future of our nursing schools to incorporate the concept of nursing informatics into the curriculum so that the nurses that graduate from that program will have the most up to date knowledge that they are going to come into contact with upon graduation.

In the future, it is expected that Nursing Informatics will be implemented in most hospitals. Because technology is ever changing, we have to be abreast with these changes and keep up with its pace. Health care has always been one of inventors' most favorite areas to divulge on. It will be a shame if we will not be able to enjoy the advantages advanced technology has to offer. Student nurses are being prepared for the future of Nursing Informatics and it is just fair to expect that we will be able to use this knowledge when the time comes and not have wasted our time studying for something which we cannot use. After theories comes application.
